I am an ophthalmologist specializing in retinal surgery and ocular oncology. After completing a demanding 2.5-year research fellowship at a medical institution, I was eager to apply my expertise, especially in an area of critical medical need in the U.S. However, a specific USCIS policy, which places an indefinite hold on immigration applications for Iranian nationals, has brought my career to a standstill. Since early 2026, I have been unable to work because my Employment Authorization Document (EAD) has been indefinitely delayed. This means I lost my position and cannot accept any clinical or research opportunities. The financial strain on my family has been immense. My partner, who is a college student, now faces the possibility of having to discontinue her education due to our financial difficulties. My daughter, too, is affected by this uncertainty.
